Sarah Lee Guthrie’s lineage is undeniable. But even if her last name weren’t synonymous with the ever-expanding current of American folk music, her voice would still captivate.
There’s a gentle urgency in her interpretations, a rare clarity and soul that breathe new life into both her own songs and the timeless classics of her heritage.
Her artistry is a natural extension of her family’s musical legacy, infused with her own creative spirit and modern perspective.
Her journey began early, stepping onto the grand stages of Wolf Trap and Carnegie Hall as a teenager in 1993, where she sang Pete Seeger’s Sailin’ Down My Golden River to sold-out crowds.
Encouraged by her mother, she chose the road over college, spending the next six years touring and performing alongside her father, Arlo Guthrie, and her brother, Abe.
Over the past two decades, she has cultivated a signature pop-fused folk-rock sound, showcased in a series of critically acclaimed albums: Exploration, Folksong, Bright Examples, and Wassiac Way.
In 2009, she released Go Waggaloo, a family album featuring original songs alongside a few with Woody’s lyrics, earning a Golden Medallion from The Parents’ Choice Foundation. The 2010 tour The Guthrie Family Rides Again brought generations together, celebrating the enduring music of her family.
“Looking back at all the shows I’ve done, the ones with my family stand out the most.
They feel bigger than me, like the best part of who I am. I shine the brightest in those moments,” she says. “Now, being back on the road with my dad, I’m reminded of what I was made for. These are the songs that define us, and I love to sing them.”
Now, Sarah Lee Guthrie continues her journey, tracing the deep roots of her musical heritage while forging her own path.
This is a rare opportunity to witness one of America’s finest folk singers as she takes the stage at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck in Houston, TX.
